Harry Batstone
Class of 1963
Harry Batstone, a great halfback, was the first team captain when the Toronto Argonauts won the first east-west Grey Cup championship in 1921. He later started for several years with Queen’s, the last university team to win the Grey Cup.
When Batstone played for Queen’s, they won the Yates Cup five times with the first one being in 1922, and the last one being in 1927.
After his playing career, Batstone coached the Queen’s senior team from 1929 to 1931 and won the intercollegiate championship his first two years. During the late 1940s, he was a member of the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) football rules committee and was the Intercollegiate representative of the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) Rules Committee.
Harry Batstone is a member of the Queen’s University Football Hall of Fame and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
