Abe Eliowitz came to Canada after being all-American at Michigan State University. He immediately caught the attention of fans with his left-footed punting and left-handed passing.

Eliowitz was an all-star at two different positions and in 1935 he was the Interprovincial Union’s leading scorer with 62 points. That same year he was Ottawa’s first recipient of the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy which is presented to the Interprovincial Union player possessing the highest qualities of courage, fair play and sportsmanship.

In 1938, Abe Eliowitz returned to the United States where he began a lengthy coaching career.
